해외에서는 인조, 모조 가죽으로 표기되는 가죽이 국내에서는 에코 가죽으로 둔갑되어 판매되고 있다는 보도가 나오며 국내 패션계가 그린워싱 논란에 휩싸였다. 해당 인조 가죽들은 폴리에스테르로 만들어져 사실상 친환경과는 머리가 멀다는 것이 전문가들의 지적이다.
미국에선 인조가죽, 한국에서는 에코가죽
글로벌 패션 브랜드 자라가 판매한 가죽 자켓의 제품명이 큰 논란을 빚었다. 상품명은 에코 레더 점퍼이지만 겉감과 안감이 모두 100% 폴리에스테르인 모조 가죽이었기 때문. 미국에서는 같은 제품을 포 레더 자켓(faux Leather Jacker)으로 판매하고 있어 더 큰 논란을 불러일으켰다. 자라 측은 시스템 상의 문제라고 해명했지만 업계는 그린워싱이라는 목소리가 높아지고 있다. 그린워싱이란 겉으로는 친환경적인 이미지를 강조하지만 실제로는 환경에 나쁜 짓을 일삼은 기업의 횡포를 꼬집는 단어다.
동물보호가 친환경으로 둔갑
그렇다면 국내 에코의류는 어떤 상황일까? 에코라는 접두사가 붙은 상품들을 조사한 결과 겉감과 안감, 충전제까지 100% 폴리에스테르를 사용한 상품들이 많았다. 에코라는 이름을 달고 레이온을 사용한 제품도 흔했다. 하지만 레이온 역시 제조공정에서 발생되는 유해물질로 논란이 많은 소재다. 이러한 상품을 판매하는 기업들은 대체로 동물성 소재를 사용하지 않았다는 이유로 에코라는 단어를 붙인 것으로 업계는 지적하고 있다.
